Why Doctors Prescribe Symbyax

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Symbyax® as a treatment for bipolar I disorder and treatment-resistant depression.1 2 However, doctors also prescribe it off-label.

Symbyax is a medication combining the antidepressant fluoxetine HCl (a long-acting version of Prozac®) and the antipsychotic olanzapine (Zyprexa®).2

Off-label uses of Symbyax

Since Symbyax first entered the market, doctors have prescribed it for:3

  • Eating disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Some research supports these practices. For example, a study published in 2002 claimed Symbyax is an effective treatment for combat-related PTSD.4 A study of treatment-resistant OCD showed that Symbyax led to moderate improvements, along with side effects such as weight gain.5 The FDA has approved fluoxetine for treatment of bulimia nervosa. Olanzapine has also shown some potential in eating disorder research, but the studies did not have control groups.6
