Celexa and Mood Stability

Although Celexa is prescribed for depression, it may not be safe as a treatment for bipolar disorder and related mood disorders. Bipolar disorder symptoms may worsen when you are taking Celexa because the medication can cause manic episodes, hypomanic episodes, and/or mixed states.1 2

Celexa is not the only antidepressant which has these effects. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may cause mood instability.

For a diagnosis of mania, hypomania, or a mixed state, symptoms must persist for at least four days.

Signs of mania

If you are experiencing a manic or hypomanic episode, talk to your doctor immediately. Make sure that the episode is not a result of Celexa or another medication.

The signs of mania can include:2 3

  • High energy
  • Racing thoughts
  • Severe difficulty sleeping
  • Risk-taking behavior
  • Grand or expansive ideas
  • Excessive irritability or happiness
  • Rapid speech
  • Hallucinations
  • Suspiciousness
  • Psychotic symptoms
  • Aggression
  • Catatonic behavior (motor immobility and unusually slow behavior)

Signs of hypomania

Hypomania is a mild version of mania. If you believe you are experiencing this problem, talk with your doctor.

The signs of hypomania can include:4

  • Overly high self-esteem
  • Pressured speech
  • Reduced need for sleep
  • Racing thoughts
  • Distractibility
  • Physical agitation
  • Risk-taking behavior

Signs of a mixed state

A mixed state includes both the symptoms of mania (above) and the symptoms of depression, and lasts at least one week.5

The signs of depression can include:

  • An unhappy mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities
  • Excessive or inadequate sleep
  • Changes in eating, appetite, or weight
  • Fatigue
  • Agitated or slow motor activity
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Thoughts of death
  • Concentration problems

Drug use, thyroid problems, or the loss of a loved one can also cause depressive symptoms, but these should be treated differently than major depression.

If you have experienced manic, hypomanic, or mixed states due to Celexa, you may be interested in consulting a personal injury attorney. These episodes may lead to you being prescribed mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder when you did not need them earlier.
